These type of scams are very common. They come in all forms of communication such as text message, email and phone calls. The sender pretends to be someone from a bank or company such as paypal. What they try and get you to do is hand over details without you knowing. It may be a fake website they point you too. Always make sure any sites that you access with personal information, has the secure icon in the address bar (Picture to the left).
